How assistants choose which brand to name
Not the highest ranked page. The most quotable one. Here is the mechanism, and the four properties the winning source almost always has.
An assistant answering a product question is doing retrieval, not ranking. It pulls a handful of passages that appear to answer the question directly, then writes a paragraph from them. The brand that gets named is the brand that appears inside a quotable passage.
Four properties of a cited source
It answers the question in the first sentence. It states specifics — materials, dimensions, prices, constraints — rather than positioning. It is structured enough to be excerpted without context. And it says what the product is not for, which is the single most retrievable kind of sentence on the internet.
Fix the page, move the answer.
This is why comparison pages and honest spec tables outperform brand pages by a wide margin, and why a well-written review on a third-party site can carry more of your visibility than your homepage does.
The uncomfortable part
Some of your answer share is not on your domain at all. It sits on forums, retailers and guides you do not control. Knowing which ones is the difference between writing more posts and writing the right one.
